Ingleborough Cave - Interesting Links

Around Clapham

Gaping Gill Main Chamber - photograph by David Ryall

The picturesque village of Clapham is a superb base from which to explore the natural wonders that abound in this beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village web site provides a comprehensive list of the amenities available in the village, including accommodation, inns, an outdoor shop, post office, and cafés.

The Local Caves

After you have visited Ingleborough Cave, we recommended that you extend your walk for another 30 minutes or so through the impressive gorge of Trow Gill and onto the moor, to visit the world-famous Gaping Gill pothole where Fell Beck plunges down a 110 m shaft. The beck is not seen again on the surface until it emerges from Clapham Beck Head Cave alongside Ingleborough Cave.

You, too, can descend the 110 m shaft and visit the awe-inspiring Gaping Gill Main Chamber - the largest cavern in the British Isles. During the Spring Bank Holiday Bradford Pothole Club erect a winch, divert the waterfall, and for a modest fee will transport you effortlessly up and down the shaft. Craven Pothole Club offer the same service during the August Bank Holiday. This is an experience that should not be missed, and one that will stay with you for a long time.

Experienced cavers with BCA insurance are allowed access to the inner recesses of Ingleborough Cave by application to the management. For those unfamiliar with the cave John Gardner has a description of the route to Terminal Lake on his web site.

If your appetite for the underground world has been whetted by your visit to Ingleborough Cave, you may like to visit other British showcaves. Details will be found on the A.B.I.S. web site.
